Weight Loss

GLP-1 Medications for Weight Loss GLP-1 (glucagon-like peptide-1) medications are a class of drugs originally developed to treat type 2 diabetes but have also shown significant efficacy in promoting weight loss! These medications work by mimicking the effects of the GLP-1 hormone, which increases insulin secretion, slows gastric emptying, and reduces appetite. This leads to lower blood sugar levels and helps with weight management.

Common GLP-1 medications used for weight loss include semaglutide (Wegovy, Ozempic) and tirzepatide (Mounjaro, Zepbound). At ICON Aesthetics, we offer semaglutide and tirzepatide that is coumpounded by a highly-regulated 503 B pharmacy, whereas many clinics use cheaper 503 A compounding pharmacies with less oversight. Here at Icon Aesthetics, we prioritize quality and patient safety! Learn more about the difference between 503 B and 503 A pharmacies HERE!

Differences Between Semaglutide and Tirzepatide Semaglutide is a GLP-1 receptor agonist that mimics the GLP-1 hormone, enhancing insulin secretion, slowing gastric emptying, and reducing appetite. It is typically administered once weekly via subcutaneous injection. Studies have shown semaglutide can lead to significant weight loss, often up to 15% of body weight over 68 weeks.

Tirzepatide is a dual glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide (GIP) and GLP-1 receptor agonist. This dual action enhances its ability to regulate blood sugar and reduce appetite. It is also administered once weekly via subcutaneous injection. Tirzepatide has shown even greater weight loss potential compared to semaglutide, with some studies indicating up to 20% weight loss over 72 weeks.
